The Sword and the Shield

As I have stated previously, I do not consider myself a Republican. I consider myself to be an Independent who leans strongly to the right. That being said, there are a couple of things going on right now that need some addressing.

Americans need jobs, and they need health care. I have not seen a believable plan yet come from the current admin. This is quite disturbing. It’s a little hard to feed you family when you’re not working. It’s a little hard to afford a decent place to live. It’s even more difficult to afford health care.

I’d like to retire before I’m 80. With the current hits on Social Security, it looks like a third career for yours truly as the greeter at Wal-Mart.

I do not support a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, even though I do not believe in gay marriages. I do, however, support legal recognition of unions between homosexuals. The difference is religion.

Those things being said, I am still voting for strength and safety. The threat posed by such nefarious individuals as Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein cannot be discounted. But it seems as though the left and the UN want us to believe that it can be. Look, folks, this is a hard world. There are a lot of people out there that just do not like us. It has nothing to do with freedom and religion, as some would have you believe. It is not because the US has squandered away the “good will” after September 11. It is not because the US has initiated a reign of aggression against other countries. It has nothing to do with any of that, or anything else the apologetic left would have you believe. It has to do with hate. These people do not like us, and it’s not for any other reason other than that. Ask Chuck Manson why he is the way he is, see what kind of answer you get. You’re damn right I’m comparing the terrorists to Manson – neither one is sane. And make no mistake – Hussein is a terrorist. Ask his “countrymen”.

You cannot reason with madness. If you are lucky, you can cure it. In most cases, all you can do is contain it. But the left and the UN do not want to ensure that the steps needed to contain these threats are taken. They are content to continue with half-measures and soft words. There’s another word for it. It’s called Appeasement.

Listen, Bush doesn’t have all the answers. But he’s got a hell of a lot more than anyone on the left. He also has the courage to take those steps needed to ensure the safety of every American. Yes, we are in uncharted waters, but they are waters we need to explore if we expect to live in a country free from terror. I expect rough winds and I expect strong seas. But I’d rather face them and grow than shrink away and simply label that end of the map as “Here be Dragons”. Because guess what, folks, there are dragons there. The question is, do we fear them, or do we slay them?

We slay them.
